David Montgomery

David R. Montgomery is a professor of geomorphology at the University of Washington.  He received a Bachelor’s degree in Geology from Stanford University and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley in Geomorphology.  An internationally recognized geologist who studies landscape evolution and the effects of geological processes on ecological systems and human societies, he was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2008.  Montgomery is the author of three award-winning popular-science books, including Dirt: The Erosion of Civilizations (2007), and has been featured in documentary films, network and cable news, and other media.  His most recent books are The Hidden Half of Nature: The Microbial Roots of Life and Health (2016) and the Growing a Revolution: Bringing Our Soil Back to Life (2017).  When not writing or doing geology, he plays guitar in the band Big Dirt.
