Founder/CEO of Straus Family Creamery & Organic Dairy Farmer Albert Straus has been a leader in sustainable organic farming practices for many decades. With the aim of creating a replicative, viable model which reflects the true costs of production and promotes responsible land stewardship and practices, he offers small-scale family farms in Northern California more stable prices and predictability in a changing organic milk market.
Albert is a strong advocate for organic, non-GMO dairy production, environmental stewardship, and family farms. He has led the movement for organic farming practices and small-scale organic dairy farms demonstrating the demand for organic dairy milk, prioritizing collaborative relationships and innovative environmental leadership. The Straus Dairy Farm became the first certified organic dairy farm west of the Mississippi River in 1994, and, in the same year, he founded the creamery – the first 100% certified organic creamery in the United States.
At the Straus Dairy Farm, Albert has invested in climate-positive dairy practices. Implemented together: carbon farming, anaerobic (methane) digesters, renewable energy, on-farm composting and electric farm vehicles, can potentially create a pathway to a carbon-neutral dairy system. At the creamery, a wide range of sustainable practices are implemented from resilient packaging to 100% renewable electricity to an extensive water reuse system, among other innovations.
Albert has been recognized internationally for his substantial environmental accomplishments. More recently, under his leadership, Straus Family Creamery was honored with Ecovia Intelligence’s international Sustainable Food Award in the Sustainability Pioneer category.
