Russ was born and raised in Omaha, educated as a Mechanical Engineer and recently completed his first 30 year career at Shell. In the first half of that Shell career, he was a Petroleum Engineer who specialized in new methods for measuring and evaluating the physical properties of the deep earth as part of finding and developing oil and gas resources around the world. After a fateful detour into corporate finance, Russ became a founding leader of Shell Technology Ventures, and then later led Shell’s well-known “GameChanger†innovation program where he had the privilege of investing in entrepreneurs with ideas that could change the game of energy. Russ was a frequently invited speaker, panelist and writer at a wide array of fora regarding the future of energy and corporate innovation including work for the US Department of Energy, CIA, National Petroleum Council, TEDx, and the Management Innovation Exchange.
Russ recently retired from Shell to step out into the external world of entrepreneurship. On his way out the door, he met some fascinating people with remarkable claims about putting huge amounts of the carbon back into the earth in a way that could make land, economy and people all healthier. Since his earliest day job was actually measuring carbon in the deep earth, and his last was investing in people with crazy ideas with high potential impact, the attraction to this idea was perhaps inevitable. Russ is proud to be connected to such an interesting and capable group of new colleagues in quest to get the carbon out of the air and back into vibrant and productive landscapes.
Russ and his wife Nancy now live in Fulshear, TX where they sometimes get visits from their 3 fine sons.
