Market Update:
5 Area Weighted Fed Cattle Price – The November 2, 2012 5-Area Weighted Fed Cattle live price was $126.20, with Dressed cattle at $196. The average steer dressed weight is running 879 lbs.
Wholesale beef prices were significantly lower compared to last week, with USDA Choice beef trading at $191.80. USDA Select traded down as well at $175.45, putting the Choice-Select spread at $16.35.
Feeder and Stocker cattle traded mostly steady to $2 lower throughout most of the country with Southeastern markets trading up to $4 higher. Slaughter cows and bulls were mostly steady to $2 lower.
The drought continues to influence the markets as pasture conditions in many places throughout the Midwest are declining. This is softening bids on calves for winter wheat. For perspective, the Kansas City area is 16 inches short on rainfall for 2012, with most of the 19 inches they have received for 2012 coming prior to July 4th.
Cattle feeding margins saw feeders losing an average of $32.68/head last week, a $24 improvement in margin over the week prior. One year ago fed cattle sold for $119.00 resulting in profits of $35/head.
Average Packer margin declined significantly from the week prior with packers losing an average of $76.48 per head, a decrease in margin of $31 from the week prior.
Industry Updates:
Industry experts have told us repeatedly that the world’s population will explode between now and 2050 and to feed the additional billions of people farmers globally will have to adopt intensive U.S. agricultural practices. This includes the use of GMO crops, vertically integrated poultry and pork operations, huge feedlots, and separation of row crop and animal agriculture. Along with these practices comes the heavy use of a host of chemicals in the form of fertilizers, herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, and issues with waste management. The system is also a heavy user of fossil fuels. Many within agriculture simply accept this as inevitable. However, the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture at Iowa State University, the Iowa Soybean Association, and the Organic Center have been exploring alternative systems that include livestock-crop rotations. They jointly conducted a study from 2003-2011 that compared the industry standard 2-year corn/soybean rotation to 3-year and 4-year row crop-livestock rotations. The hypothesis of the study was that “cropping system diversification would promote ecosystem services that would supplement, and eventually displace, synthetic external inputs used to maintain crop productivityâ€. The authors state that “One of the key challenges of the 21st century is developing ways of producing sufficient amounts of food while protecting both environmental quality and the economic well-being of rural communities. Over the last half century, conventional approaches to crop production have relied heavily on manufactured fertilizers and pesticides to increase yields, but they have also degraded water quality and posed threats to human health and wildlife. Consequently, attention is now being directed toward the development of crop production systems with improved resource use efficiencies and more benign effects on the environment.†The study was conducted at the Iowa State University Marsden Farm. The livestock-row crop rotation utilized small grains production with legumes and composted animal manure. Significantly smaller amounts of synthetic fertilizer and herbicides were used in this system with conventional amounts used in the standard 2-year corn-soybean rotation. Significant findings included: 1) the diversified rotations were just as profitable as the 2-year corn-soybean rotation; 2) Weeds were effectively managed in all cropping systems, but herbicide use was reduced 88% in the livestock-row crop rotations; 3) Labor costs were higher in the livestock-row crop rotations, but were offset by lower costs in synthetic nitrogen and herbicide inputs; 4) Weed control in the livestock-row crop rotation saw a decrease in both the weed soil seedbank and in weed biomass, with herbicide usage 6-10 time slower than the standard 2-year corn-soybean rotation, and freshwater toxicity 200 times lower. The authors admit that the environmental advantages are compelling and the economics are there to support this type of system. They state that the true test will be when this type of system is moved from university small plot trials to full scale farming. However, this is already being accomplished by a growing number of farmers throughout the Midwest. What we have to remember is that the proposed system is not anything new. This was a common agricultural practice for centuries and was frequently used in the U.S. up until just a few decades ago. The Grass Fed Exchange introduced this concept at our 212 Conference by featuring Gabe Brown from North Dakota. Gabe has been implementing a system of cover crops and livestock impact for a number of years and has some compelling data to show the tremendous benefits of this system. In 2013, we will continue to discuss livestock-row crop rotations at our Grass Fed Exchange Conference in Bismarck, ND August 20 – 22 and will feature farm tours that illustrate this practice.
According to a study published by FarmEcon, LLC, combined meat and poultry per capita consumption would be 25 more pounds if the federal government would relax its mandate on corn ethanol production. The mandate that 13.8 billion gallons of ethanol be blended with gas each next year is expected to produce a value loss of over $30 billion in the meat and poultry industries. All this is taking a toll on the corn supply available for U.S. meat and poultry production.
North Dakota and Kazakhstan are starting to look pretty similar, at least as far as cattle are concerned. In the past two years, 5,000 head of Hereford and Angus cattle have been shipped from North Dakota to Kazakhstan to help rebuild their cattle herds. Ranchers in Kazakhstan wanted cattle that can thrive in cold climates similar to what they experience and found that North Dakota fits the bill. They are also sending cowboys from Kazakhstan to North Dakota for hands-on training in cattle handling. However, the Kazakhstan ranchers are finding that the cattle they have imported so far are gaining weight slower than they typically do in the U.S. due to lower feedstuff availability. Perhaps the ranchers in Kazakhstan should consider grass-based genetics?
Texas A&M AgriLife Research is working on a project to determine nitrous oxide and methane emissions in beef cattle feedlots. The research is funded by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture, the AgriLife Research Center, and the Texas Cattle Feeders Association. According to scientists, nitrous oxide and methane are 310 times and 21 times more potent as greenhouse gasses (GHG), respectively, than carbon dioxide. The study showed that methane and nitrous oxide increased with an increase in manure pack temperature, especially following a rain. However, the spike in values would decline after over 3-6 days to pre-event levels. The scientists conducting the study state that knowing what the nitrous oxide and methane emissions are could lead to management changes that positively influence GHG emissions. These changes could include changes in ration formulation and manure management.
In a statement made by Dr. Oz on “The View†he said that “meat is not the cause of obesity in Americaâ€. Dr. Oz went on to say that 1/3rd of Americans between 16 and 27 are considered overweight, but that the problem is related to convenience foods, portion sizes, and fast food availability, not necessarily the food itself. Bill Layden, a former staffer with the USDA Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion, said that the USDA’s dietary guidelines are simply a measure of minimum levels of nutrients required for general health and do not set standards for nutrient requirements for optimal health. He went on to say that the meat and poultry industry have an opportunity to make their case for the nutritional value of their products.
In The News:
According to a study conducted by the Montreal Heart Institute, even a single junk food meal can be harmful to our arteries. The study indicated that damage can occur after a single meal containing a high degree of saturated fats, but that a meal rich in mono- and polyunsaturated fats may actually have a positive effect. The study was designed to compare the impact of a junk food diet with the typical Mediterranean diet on the endothelial lining of the vascular blood vessels. One result from the study was that individuals with high triglyceride levels benefited more from the Mediterranean meals compared to those with lower triglyceride levels. In the study, the participants consumed Mediterranean type meals for the first week and then junk food type meals for the second week. Endothelial function was measured after each meal using ultrasound. The scientists found that after the junk food meals, participant’s arteries dilated 24% less than when in a fasting state. With the Mediterranean meals, the arteries dilated normally.
For sausage lovers, the name Bruce Aidell should be familiar, as his All Natural brand of sausages is sold in retail outlets all over the U.S. What most people don’t know about Aidell is that he is actually Dr. Aidell, having an earned doctorate in Biology and that he was once a promising breast cancer researcher. However, the lab he was working in lost its funding and a friend talked him into being her charcuterie chef. Aidell has since sold his sausage business and now devotes his time to writing cookbooks. Aidell is the author of the popular “The Complete Meat Cookbookâ€. Aidell was asked what has changed since he started writing cookbooks 15 years ago. He stated that the internet has become a much greater influencer in people’s everyday lives; that E. coli was not really a dominant issue; meat could only be purchased at traditional sources such as supermarkets; and that grass fed beef basically didn’t exist. He went on to say that you can now by meat from non-traditional sources, such as straight from the farmer and that issues such as seasonality are becoming more important. He stated that in the commodity sector there is no such thing as seasonality in terms of product availability. In his latest book, he puts a lot of emphasis on grass fed and natural varieties of meat. He does say that some of the very best and some of the very worst beef he has ever eaten has been grass fed beef and that he loves highly marbled grass fed beef.
A gun shop in Albuquerque, New Mexico, is under fire for sponsoring a “Coyote hunt†in New Mexico. The contest is designed to reduce coyote numbers in the state, as livestock losses have mounted in recent years. Sheep and lamb losses number in the thousands in New Mexico annually due to coyote predation and more than 220,000 head of cattle were lost in the Southwest in 2010. However, animal rights protestors are vehemently opposing the hunt and are even making death threats against the organizers. Some of the animal rights activists are stating that “we should line up all the rednecks and hunt themâ€, and that the hunters “should burn in hellâ€. Apparently, according to the protestors, it is okay to line up humans and hunt them, but it is not okay to reduce a problem predator population, unless of course, the coyotes are eating their pets. Frankly, I do not know of a single place in North America where the coyote population is threatened to the point of extinction. They seem to be rather resilient.
